Hack Your Desk: DIY Workplace Wellness

More and more organizations are realizing the benefits of workplace wellness. But if you’re at a startup, social enterprise, nonprofit, or otherwise don’t have large wellness budget, what can you do to take care of yourself?

In this workshop, you’ll learn tech tools to help support healthy habits at work, ideas for how to create a DIY standing desk, and breathing/stretching options for short breaks. The class will also include a 30 minute “business casual yoga” portion with simple yoga-inspired stretches that can be done in jeans. This will also be the first SFTech4Good event with a presentation by SFTech4Good event producer Katharine Bierce, who is an RYT 200-certified yoga teacher as well as a tech for good maven!

September 28 - Election Tech Panel: Civic Tech, Data, and Voter Engagement

It’s an election year, so we’ve put together a panel on how technology is being used for improving voter engagement! SFTech4Good is partnering with the Bloomberg Data for Good Exchange, which is part of a long Bloomberg tradition of advocacy for using data science and human capital to solve problems at the core of society.

This is a non-partisan event and will focus on tools that get eligible voters registered, help voters make better voter decisions or engage and participate more, and help voters find and use public data to help inform themselves. The panel will touch on the role of government and data, with respect to how data can be used by third party apps, and data and voter registration, and how data collection can inform voter registration efforts. The panel is:

Delta Analytics provides nonprofits with a team of data professionals on a data-related 6 month project. The team will work with you in identifying your non-profit's data analytics needs and will structure a project to help address your most important data priorities. We want to work with high impact organizations that will use this service grant in a meaningful way. Applicants should already have data collected and a defined question in mind that is feasible to answer with existing data, and a dedicated point person.

September 30 - Deadline to Apply for Team4Tech Project, South Africa

Team4Tech is seeking individual volunteers to set up IT infrastructure and conduct a Teacher Training Workshop for a LEAP Science and Math School in South Africa from November 28 - December 7, 2016. Volunteers will partner with LEAP 6 School that is located in Ga-Rankuwa, township outside of Pretoria. This will help educators use technology to increase their efficiency and improve learners’ problem solving skills. Team4Tech connects technology volunteers and solutions with high-impact local organizations. Learn more here:

October 6: The School Fund Annual Gala

The^[b][c][d] School Fund is a local non-profit that crowd-funds scholarships for high potential students in the developing world who cannot afford to attend school. In 2016 they will grant $225,000 in scholarships to over 500 students in seven countries. Research shows that in developing countries, children with better education have higher incomes, better health and greater security.

October 13 - Conference on Infrastructure Monitoring

The World Bank and UC Berkeley Center for Effective Global Action are co-hosting a workshop on new technologies to monitor performance of infrastructure investments in the developing world. Explore the use of sensor networks (IoT), remote sensing (satellite/LIDAR), and other technologies for measuring and evaluating the economic performance of infrastructure investments- from transport systems and utilities to rural infrastructure (like irrigation and warehousing). Participants will include tech sector companies like Planet.com, Premise, Digital Globe, Facebook, and Cisco plus researchers from Stanford, Berkeley, UC San Diego, MIT, Portland State, and more.

Mentor Sharing Economy Social Impact Startups

Apply to be one of 50 volunteer experts and mentor 5 entrepreneurs developing sharing economy products and services. The program will combine skype calls with online coaching to validate the business model and tackle the key development challenges of the selected entrepreneurs. It’s only 15 minutes per week! This builds on Global Sharing Week, which 2 years ago had 40 mentors from 27 countries offer their pro-bono mentoring to 3 amazing social entrepreneurs over 4 weeks.
